Creating Art

In October 2008 the Orton Family Foundation issued a Call-for-Vermont Artists.  Sixteen artists responded.  Over pizza and coffee 20 Starksboro residents gathered at the town library to narrow the list down to three finalists-- Rob Mermin, Liza Myers and Matthew Perry to be interviewed on January 8th.

After interviews with the three finalists, small group discussions and key pad polling, a group of 18 residents chose Matthew Perry to work with the community.  It was Matthew's creative ideas and experience working with populations of all ages, abilities and income that differentiated him from the rest.

From February 2009 through November 2009, Matthew Perry will work with Starksboro residents to build on the storytelling phase.  Through art-making Matthew will work with residents to explore questions like: Why do you live here?  How does the working landscape affect your life? What are your favorite places? What are you proudest of?  What are your hopes and concerns for future generations?  Residents will then tap into their "collective creativity" to evaluate the challenges and opportunities they face together as they plan for their future.

Art work will be showcased and stories shared at the town-wide celebration of the Harvest Dinner on November 7th.
